Description : Giancarlo Mattioli (1933–2018) was an Italian architect, urban planner, and designer based in Bologna. After studying architecture in Florence, he co-founded the design collective "Città Nuova" in 1961. In 1965, the group entered a lighting design competition for Artemide, submitting a jellyfish-inspired lamp that concealed its bulb to create soft ambient light. Launched in 1967 as the Nesso lamp, it became a design icon still featured in MoMA's permanent collection today.

Beyond design, Mattioli played a key role in shaping Bologna's urban landscape, working in the city's technical planning offices from the late 1960s until 1999, contributing to major projects including the historic center plan and a new railway junction.
